Note that UAL's stock plunge began well before the events of September 11. Since January 2000, United's falling fortunes have reflected a myriad range of problems within the airline. The numbers clearly support the criticism that UAL is trying to capitalize on the the aftermath of September 11 as a means of having the government pay for its own mismanagement.
